Possible Variations
- Don't blink, wink. If you want only one eye to go off when you press the 4th button so that you "wink" instead of "blink", you can achieve that easily with a slight wiring modification. Instead of connecting both red leads from the eye LEDs to the 'e' pins on the custom board, only connect the one that you want to wink. Connect the one that should stay lit directly to power (I.E. connect it when you connect all the red leads.)
- I don't need to blink or wink, give me more sounds!
The use of the 4th remote button for blinking/winking was a design
choice. If you don't want it you can have that 4th button play a
sound or sounds instead by changing the wiring a bit: Rather than
attaching both red leads from the LEDS to the 'e' holes in the
custom board, connect them directly to power as in the variation
above. Then run an additional connection between one of
holes on the board and contact on the Adafruit Sound FX
board. This will establish the 4th remote button as another
trigger to the sound board. You'll have to add more content to
the FX board, but s a matter of connecting the sound board to
a computer with a USB cable and adding appropriately-named sound
files. Details about how to do that can be found on the Adafruit
product web
site: FX
Mini Sound Board
Note that the electronics assembly described in the main build uses Triggers 0, 1 and 2 on the FX board. If you tie an 'e' contact to the '3' pin, it will be Trigger 3. Also, just in case you think that because there are two 'e' pins on the custom board, maybe the 2nd one can be a 5th trigger, it won't. Both 'e' pins activate when the 4th button is pressed. They are separated only so that if they both have LEDs on them, each LED gets its full supply of power... - I don't like the Jawa sounds you picked, give me different ones! This one you can do without wiring changes because the sounds that are played are solely determined by the contents by the files stored on the FX board. All you have to do is load different sound files onto the board by attaching the board to a computer with a micro USB cable. You actually have a lot of options in that any particular trigger (remote control button) can trigger a single sound, play a random sound from a set, sequence through a set of sounds, or set an audio file playing until the same button is pressed again. Again, details are on the Adafruit web site: https://learn.adafruit.com/adafruit-audio-fx-sound-board/triggering-audio
- Three or even four sound triggers are not enough for me, can I have a 2nd glove? The FX board has 10 trigger inputs and we're only using 3 of them by default, 4 if you build the no blink/wink version. Without going into much detail, yes, you could add a 2nd control glove paired with a 2nd receiver/custom board pair. The receiver and custom board are built as above, but the 0,1,2,e pins on that 2nd custom board would be tied to, say, trigger pins 4,5,6 and 7 on the FX board and Ta-Da, you have a full 2nd set of triggers for the same sound system. Load up sounds or sets of sounds for those triggers and you can have a jawa conversation with anyone.
- I'm a Tusken Raider and I'm jealous, can I have a sound system? Sure. You can build the electronics part above and install it into anything. Leave off the eyes, tie an 'e' pin to FX so you have 4 triggers, load the FX board with the right sounds and figure out the physical mounting in your bucket and you're ready to go. Actually, DZ-61970 will be doing this in his Tusken as soon as the GJH build is done. You can also adapt the control glove to different setups, including the Gaffi stick arrangement mentioned in "Control System Build" above, putting buttons on a blaster, etc. Go wild.
- I'm an off-world Jawa, what about me? We were focused on Tatooine Jawas for this build, so that's what we've specified. But if you want to substitute red eyes, maybe different eye covers to meet the CRL, maybe use different sounds (Jawaese with an Arvala-7 accent?), have at it. We don't have a parts list or a set of sound files for you, but we're confident you can handle it and hope we've provided enough info to start you on your way.
